Naming Evil: White Supremacy and Nationalism

I was invited to preach at Sixth Avenue United Church of Christ in Denver, Colorado, on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Sunday, on January 14, 2018. Just four days after Trump  asked: “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?”  when speaking about Haiti, El Salvador, and African countries. He then suggested the U.S should bring in more people from countries like Norway, which is about 95% white. In response, I wrote this sermon “Naming Evil: White Supremacy and Nationalism,” addressing this language of white nationalism and white supremacy, and talking about the nature of evil and the danger of not naming it.As Rev. Dr. Emilie Townes, Womanist Ethicist and Dean of Vanderbilt Divinity School, said: “Sin is individual, evil is when we systematize sin.”Scripture: 1 Samuel 3:1-10, (11-20); and John 1:43-51.Photo Credit: Louise Palanker
